St Bartholomew's School, Newbury

St Bartholomew’s School in Newbury is one of the oldest state schools in the country, dating back to 1466.  The project consolidates the 1,650 place secondary school from two sites into one efficient campus and releases surplus older school buildings for sale.

The building concept peals back the landscape to reveal the school, respecting its green site and sub-urban setting. The design incorporates five buildings with tapered, green roofs creating a striking form with defined external learning and socialising spaces.   At its heart a 1,000 sq m tensile fabric roof provides a large covered gathering space.

St Bartholomew’s School has been assessed for BREEAM “Excellent” for both pre and post construction stages.  The design incorporates a biomass boiler, and mixed mode ventilation delivering an energy saving of at least 40% over Part L 2006.

Scott Brownrigg Planning prepared and negotiated planning permission for a replacement building, floodlit sports facilities, parking and landscaping on existing playing fields.  Permission was achieved in 13 weeks from submission.
