The Elmgreen School, Lambeth

The Elmgreen School completed is the first Parent Promoted school in the UK, accommodating 1,100 students from 11 - 18.

The design and realisation of the school was a true collaboration between the local authority, teachers, parents, contractor and architect.  The design responds to new ways of learning, a greater and extended use of technology, greater levels of student autonomy and personalisation of the curriculum by providing open and reconfigurable spaces where passive supervision is an important feature.

The design is based on a traditional market square.  This acts a focus for learning and creates connections between the different learning areas.  It promotes ease of access by encouraging different ways of moving between departments and classrooms and so prevents congestion and has been designed to allow flexibility in its use for both curriculum activity, to socialise in and for community use.  It has been transformed it into a year-round external space through its glass roof.

Our planning team worked closely with the design team and planning officers to ensure that resolution to grant permission was achieved in 11 weeks from submission of the application.
