Northwood MoD HQScott Brownrigg’s planning and architecture teams worked together to secure planning approval on behalf of Mowlem plc and Defence Estates for the comprehensive reorganisation of the MoD’s Headquarters at Northwood. The site totals 18 hectares and is home to the UK national defence headquarters and one of three worldwide NATO headquarters. The proposals rationalise and reorganise the existing facilities and integrate new buildings, all of which achieve an ‘excellent’ BREEAM rating. The planning challenge was to lead consultation and establish good relationships with planning officers and to manage the consultant team in preparing the planning submission to a very tight deadline. Approval in February 2006 ensured funding was secured and negotiations continued to enable all pre-commencement conditions to be discharged prior to the late October 2006 start date.
