Bangkok Metropolitan Rapid Transit System

The initial system of the Bangkok MRT comprises a single line from Hua Lamphong in the south, to Bang Su in the north.  Nine stations were designed with minimal impact on the street scene.   Station entrances
were an important element to integrate into the Thai environment, whilst the cut-and cover construction (generally within the existing road corridors) formed the enclosure for developing station interiors.

The designs incorporated two overlapping roof planes with inclined structure and a secondary 'welcoming' canopy - both distinctly Thai but within a contemporary steel and glass form.

The initial system was planned with interchange links to the later Orange Line, and the Bangkok elevated Transit System. The design details were developed with the engineering team led by Arup.
