Sarah Bonnell School, Newham BSF
The design for the new Sarah Bonnell School for Girls has been heavily influenced by the dominant form of the Edwardian Board School building and the very cramped nature of the site. The new design not only unites the disparate buildings on the site, but also provides high quality external spaces to be used by the girls socially and for sport. Working closely with educationalists and ICT partners, the layout of the whole school has been reorganised, with the new building creating a spacious heart, from which radiates the various learning communities. Being a specialist Languages College, particular emphasis has been placed on the Languages Cafe, which encourages community use in a space that is very accessible to those not normally used to using educational facilities. This is one of four BSF Schools in Newham for which Scott Brownrigg also provided town planning advice.
