SHaW Futures Academy
This new 11-19 secondary school specialising in Health and Wellbeing Sciences is situated on a prominent central site in Bromley, South-East London. The innovative multi-storey design has been developed to provide students with outstanding tuition in traditional academic subjects, combined with a mixture of hi-tech specialist laboratories, communal teaching spaces and contemporary classrooms. The school will deliver a vibrant and engaging education that aims to raise aspirations for young people in the community and respond to the real-life skills requirements of industry bolstering the employability of the local population.
The form and massing have been driven by a small site footprint and responds to key urban design analysis, neighbouring properties and numerous other hidden constraints including a buried Culvert. The scheme is well located to create a bold impact on the streetscape of the area. The building stands in a key location which has resulted in a lot of interest both in planning and leading up to the planning application submission having had several public consultations and a CABE review.
When complete, the building is likely to be the tallest school of its kind within the UK. As a result, the approach to curriculum delivery has been a critical component of the design process and has required rigorous testing of the timetabling and people movement flow analysis.
