Cardiff Ice Arena, the first phase of the £250m Cardiff International Sports Village (ISV) and the new home of the Cardiff Devils Ice hockey team has completed.

Designed by international design practice Scott Brownrigg for developers Greenbank Partnerships Ltd, the dual pad Ice Arena incorporates 3,000 spectator seats. The primary rink has been designed to Olympic standards and measures 60x30 metres. It will host international events in hockey and figure skating, along with new sports to Wales such as speed skating and curling. The second rink measures 54x27 metres and will host club games, training and leisure events and be capable of accommodating 1,000 spectators.

In addition the arena incorporates a Cardiff Devils shop, cafes, bars and viewing galleries as well as a gym, fitness, and flexibility studio that will enable the facility to support national and international ice sports squads, with the potential to become part of a Winter Sports Centre of Excellence for Wales.

The Cardiff Devils won their first game in their new home recently to a packed out arena.

Outline approval has also been granted for the later phases in the ISV development, to include a 250m indoor ski-slope, above a 1,300 space car park, an indoor snow play centre and a stunning 400 ft., 32-storey mixed-use tower which will accommodate an art gallery, a 60-bed luxury hotel, 62 apartments, a roof top viewing gallery and a ‘winter garden’.

In addition a retail plinth, partially covered, will contain shops and restaurants positioned around a sheltered lowered plaza, with external seating. The plinth and the plaza are linked by stepped seating, creating an external auditorium for performances, and offering views over Cardiff Bay.
