Including the prestigious Project of the Year

The Scott Brownrigg-designed St George’s Activity Centre in Weybridge, UK has successfully beaten off competition at the Education Estates awards, winning in both categories in which it was shortlisted: Project of the Year – Schools and Inspiring Learning Spaces.

The Education Estates awards celebrate excellence and achievement in education. Taking place this year, and this year only, in a digital format, winners were announced on Thursday 15 October 2020.

The Activity Centre at St George’s is a 4,000 sq m, three-storey building that supports the School’s ambitious sporting vision. It provides an inspirational environment for students and community participation and engagement, supporting a project vision that delivers ‘activity for all’.

With a striking, wave-like roof fashioned from renewably sourced Glulam, the building flows in union with its Green Belt surroundings. A processional staircase, based on the staircase at Wells Cathedral, connects all different activities throughout the building.

Winning the Inspiring Learning Spaces award is a recognition of the building’s achievement in offering inclusion to all its end users. All students get to be part of the sports, whether actively or as spectators. Whilst in the main sports hall, an innovative glass-sprung sports floor promotes a new way of teaching multiple sports in one building. The fully programmable LED lighting provides line markings for all types of sports, and enhances the experience for visually impaired students.

Director Ed Hayden and Associate Architect Felicity Meares, who led the St George’s Activity Centre, join the Education Estates conference programme today, Friday 16 October, to discuss designing inclusive environments in more detail. Join them here.

Last night’s wins build upon the Education Architect of the Year, which Scott Brownrigg won at the Education Estates Awards last year. Scott Brownrigg are also shortlisted for Education Architect of the Year at this year’s BD Architect of the Year Awards taking place on 23 October.
