Designing GMP spaces for UK life sciences growth

Designing GMP spaces for UK life sciences growth

Share this:

The UK’s life sciences sector is thriving, and demand for high-quality GMP-compliant facilities has never been greater. In collaboration with Hoare Lea, we share key insights on designing spaces that meet strict regulations while inspiring innovation and attracting world-class talent.

With an estimated worth of £100 billion, the UK life sciences sector is booming and is home to some of the leading life science organisations and campus environments in the world.

Recognising the role of British science and innovation in delivering long-term economic growth and better health outcomes, the UK Government have committed to invest up to £520 million to further support life sciences manufacturing as part of a new Industrial strategy launched last month.

Continued growth of the sector, now supported by the new Industrial strategy, is generating increasing demand for Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) space to support pharmaceuticals and biotechnology as well as advanced food processing, cosmetics manufacturing, and other life science sectors across the UK. Creating with it, a key opportunity to raise the standards of GMP design and provide a solution that mirrors the quality of space currently on the market for R&D, specifically designed to attract and retain global talent while meeting stringent regularity requirements.

Designing GMP-compliant spaces is complex and requires careful planning and interdisciplinary collaboration to ensure designs not only satisfy the functional needs of production, but also the stringent expectations of regulators. Global standards provide the framework to protect patient and consumer safety, but it is the role of designer to implement those standards in practical and often innovative ways.

With an in depth understanding of UK regulations and experience in designing and delivering life science facilities across the UK, architecture practice Scott Brownrigg have teamed up with Engineers Hoare Lea to produce a comprehensive architectural guide for UK Developers, agents and design professionals new to GMP design.

A well-designed GMP facility provides a foundation upon which high-quality products can be reliably manufactured to improve health and well-being, ensuring the built environment is an active partner in the pursuit of GMP compliance and excellence.  By following the principles outlined in this guide, designers can create GMP facilities that not only pass inspections but operate efficiently and safely from day one.
