SHaW Futures Academy: a design evaluation

Scott Brownrigg are committed to gathering feedback and data on the performance of the buildings and environments that we design, and to sharing knowledge and research through our Design Research Unit. In addition to gathering client feedback and carrying out lessons learnt workshops, to help us understand how we might improve the performance of future buildings, we also offer RIBA Stage 7 Services including Soft Landings and Post Occupancy Evaluation Services.

This report offers a design evaluation of SHaW Futures Academy. Although unbuilt, it offers a useful example of how to resolve curriculum delivery and pupil management in a multi-storey school environment and was the inspiration for the co-edited RIBA book 'Urban Schools: Designing for High Density' awarded AJ100 Collaboration of the Year 2020.

Delivered as part of the Department for Education (DfE) schools programme, and imagined as a landmark as part of the wider regeneration of the Bromley area, SHaW Futures Academy was designed to be a centre for Science, Health and Wellbeing educational excellence, offering 11- to 19-year-olds unrivalled access to skills and opportunities on their front doorstep and was designed over a two year period from 2016-2017.
