A key challenge was to provide distinct functions with contrasting requirements. For example, quiet study spaces alongside music practice rooms. Our proposal separates the functions into four individual blocks, united by a circular central space. This forms the ‘heart’ of the building and provides valuable interstitial space to support collaborative learning and encourage social interaction. Flexibility is built into this central atrium, the cafe, auditorium, atrium and entrance foyer can be used as separate spaces or as one larger single use space.
By embodying the ethos of the school’s six form course, the building itself is designed to provide a learning tool for the students: Playful elements create moments of joy and inspire learning. Construction details are exposed and celebrated to nurture inquisitive students and as an exemplar low carbon building it provides a catalyst to improve the school’s environmental footprint.
The siting of the building and carefully framed views capture a panoramic of the vast green fields. Environmental features such as hybrid cooling and transitional spaces between internal and external help regulate internal climate with a vision to achieve net zero energy.
