We’re pleased to announce that applications are now open for the RIBA Scott Brownrigg Award for Sustainable Development 2026.

Created in partnership with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), the award provides a £10,000 grant to support research and practical work that tackles environmental and ethical challenges through architecture.

Since launching in 2022, the award has supported ideas that explore how the built environment can respond to some of the most pressing challenges facing communities around the world. We’re looking for individuals and teams who want to investigate new approaches, test ideas and create meaningful change through architecture.

The grant supports projects aligned with one or more of the United Nations Global Compact Sustainable Development Goals, from climate action and sustainable cities to reducing inequality, improving health and wellbeing, and creating more resilient communities.

Whether through research, design exploration or practical application, the award aims to help develop skills, generate new thinking and create solutions that improve the quality of life for people and communities.

Who can apply?

The award is open to architecture students, graduates, academics and qualified architects who have studied at an institution offering RIBA-validated courses in the UK or internationally.

Applicants can apply individually or as part of an interdisciplinary team. We welcome collaborations that bring together different perspectives and expertise, recognising that many of the challenges we face require collective thinking.

Successful projects should last between three and 12 months and demonstrate clear potential to contribute to sustainable development through architecture.

What are we looking for?

Applications will be assessed on:

• The relevance and originality of the proposed research or practical work

• The potential contribution to the United Nations Global Compact Sustainable Development Goals

• The applicant’s ability and experience in the proposed area

• The quality of project planning, including timelines, resources and budget management

• How the opportunity will support the applicant’s personal and professional development

• The wider benefits of the work for the architectural profession and the communities it seeks to support
