Learning in practice: Apprentice-led site visit

On Tuesday, a group of student-level colleagues at Scott Brownrigg stepped out of the studio and onto site at 17 Columbus Courtyard in Canary Wharf. The visit, organised by Level 6 Apprentice Architectural Assistant Bradley Agyei, offered an invaluable opportunity to experience the construction process up close - and understand how the details we design are brought to life on site.

Welcomed by Morgan Sindall Construction, the visit was led by Site Manager Shayne Marples, Design Manager Megan Ryan, and Assistant Site Manager Harry Curtis. They offered expert insight into the realities of delivering a high-profile refurbishment project in a live environment - sharing how construction teams navigate constraints, sequence works, and adapt to on-the-ground challenges.

The group explored the complexities of temporary works and demolition, saw the effects of CDM regulations in real time, and discussed how buildability is shaped by early collaboration between architect and contractor. The visit also highlighted how sustainable practices - such as the reuse of materials - are being applied on site.

What stood out most was how this experience helped bridge the gap between design intent and practical delivery. While architectural education lays the foundation, these real-world insights sharpen decision-making and build confidence.

Thank you Bradley for taking the lead in creating this opportunity for himself and others, and to the Morgan Sindall team for generously giving their time to share knowledge and support the next generation of architects.

Because it’s these experiences - the ones that connect the dots between drawing board and building site - that shape our thinking, and ultimately, shape better architecture.
