A new-build Wellness Centre for New City College and the local community at the gateway to a new public park and residential development. Our design incorporates a multi-use sports hall with spectator seating to Basketball England ‘Premier Level’ U-18 requirements, fitness equipment studio, activity studio, assessment and physiotherapy room, changing suite and café.
We developed the brief and vision working closely with College stakeholders, the residential developer, the local planning authority and community. Our compact, spatially efficient design targets net zero carbon and promotes physical activity and wellbeing by revealing sports facilities to passers-by and through provision of inclusive social spaces connected to the new park.
Our approach embraces the biophilia hypothesis that humans are innately attracted to and seek connections with the natural world, natural materials, textures, patterns and colours. Landscape views are provided from key spaces, natural ventilation and daylighting are optimised and the building’s cross laminated timber structure which is key to the carbon strategy for the project is revealed internally and externally.
